The third oldest electrical contractor to begin business in Atlanta started with the electrical revolution that began in 1915. Founded in 1917 by the original founders, William F. and C. J. McLendon, the company remained majority owned by the McLendon descendants until 1982 when Edgar C. Walton purchased sole ownership.

Edgar Walton remained majority owner until 1993 when Kathryn W. Lake, daughter of Edgar, purchased ownership. Kathy joined the company in 1984 and was elected President in 1993. She remains as 100% owner, President and Chief Executive Officer.

The original offices are believed to have been in downtown Atlanta alongside the trolley line on Peachtree Street. During the 1940's the company was located at 1071 Peachtree Street. Moving to the eastern end of Linden Avenue and later to the western end of Linden, the company's offices were relocated in 1965 to Morosgo Drive in the Buckhead area and in 1980 to Talley Street in Decatur before relocating to the current location in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Records indicate repairs of small appliances, installing lamps and occasionally installing the first electrical service to a house as common company projects during the "good-ole-days". Dixie Electric then graduated to schools, churches and hospitals during the 40's and 50's. In the 80's Dixie Electric completed the 10.5 million dollar Delta Airlines Administration Center, and in the 90's the 4.3 million dollar expansion of Lenox Square. In 1999, Dixie closed out the decade with the 7.5 million dollar (1.7 million square foot) Mall of Georgia complex. For over eighty years, on both small and large projects, Dixie Electric has maintained its family atmosphere.
In 2005, Dixie Electric, under the ownership of Kathy Lake, was certified as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise by the State of Georgia Department of Transportation and a Female Business Enterprise by the City of Atlanta.
